After nearly fifteen years in the Investment Sales group at Welsh Companies Tom founded Terra Firma Commercial in the summer of 2009, at the height of the Great Recession.  At Welsh Tom developed the reputation of being able to lease or sell anything and everything.  And Tom has; everything from large multi-tenant investment properties, to single tenant, net leased buildings; from large vacant industrial buildings to retail portfolios, from auto repair shops to night clubs; from restaurants to businesses, from churches to car washes, from apartment portfolios to the state of Minnesota’s emission control facilities, just to name a few.  Whenever a client brought a property to Welsh that no one else could make sense of Tom was often asked to assist.  Often times these Clients were less sophisticated than a typical commercial property participant but Tom has the knowledge, patience and enthusiasm to work with all kinds of Tenants and Buyers and Sellers, explaining the process and adding value at every step of the process.

Tom earned a Master’s Degree in Finance from the University of Minnesota after obtaining an under graduate degree in Economics from Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.  Prior to joining Welsh Tom worked as a financial analyst and accounting manager for Rosemount, Incorporated, a subsidiary of Fortune 100, Emerson Electric.  Tom utilizes his familiarity with the numbers to dispassionately define the best course of action for all involved.  It is this mastery of the numbers, combined with excellent communication skills, and a broad knowledge in all aspects of business and real estate, which allows Tom to confidently ensure the attainment of his client’s goals.

Tom grew up in North Mankato, Minnesota.  Tom is the fifth of the ten (10) children of Tom (a North Mankato policeman for 25 years) and Dorothy (Tim, Mary, John, Jane, Anne, Billy, Elizabeth, Matt and Pat).  With all those siblings, Tom learned how to negotiate at an early age.  He graduated from Mankato West High School and, after graduating from Saint John’s, spent several years working as a commercial fisherman out of Kodiak, Alaska.  Tom has always worked.  As a result he has been involved in all types of businesses in the retail, hospitality, service and manufacturing industries.  So he understands the dynamics involved in operating a successful business enterprise and how that interprets into real estate needs.  Tom’s client list is long and varied.

Tom is blissfully married to Katie, his wife of for more than twenty-five years.  Katie is a Senior Law Clerk in the office of the most Honorable Chief Judge Michael Davis of the Eighth District of the Federal Judiciary.  Tom and Kate have been blessed with four extraordinary children: Sam (a Terra Firma Agent), Maggie, Paul and Matt, (all current college degree seekers).  Tom loves to read award winning fictional novels, along with a lot of history and business.  Additionally, Tom is active outdoors: boating, fishing, camping, canoeing, hunting, biking and hiking.  And Tom loves playing cards too, usually poker, or Buck Euchre.  Each year Tom sponsors a friendly Championship Poker Tournament (seven card stud, high-low, no qualifications). Tom also loves to travel having been to many parts of the globe, but with many more to visit.

Tom also enjoys working with his hands.  He has done a lot of re-modeling over the years and owns a vast collection of tools.  Tom knows how to do just about everything.  Over the years, he has essentially gutted and re-built over ten properties by himself.  He has a small growing real estate investment portfolio so he intimately understands all the challenges of ownership.

Tom keeps well informed of industry trends and changes impacting the commercial real estate marketplace through his active participation in many industry trade associations including the National Association of Realtors.  Tom is in the process of earning his Certified Commercial Investment (CCIM) designation as well as his Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR).
